Welcome to Duane Reade Sucks.

There is a virtual monopoly in New York City on drug stores. As they say in the jingle, "Everywhere you go, Duane Reade!" The chain operates over 230 stores, and has been ranked as the fastest-growing drugstore chain in the country.

Yet for a city that prides itself on being the best in the world (best restaurants, best theater, best nightlife, best museums, best shopping, and so on), we have the worst drug stores. The typical Duane Reade drugstore offers a dingy, dirty atmosphere and surly, foul-mouthed, incompetent (if not downright violent) staff.

As feedback to store employees and managers has gotten me nowhere over the years, I thought it time to create a space for New Yorkers to share their Duane Reade stories. Please, be polite and be honest about your experiences in Duane Reade stores. Hopefully with some collective storytelling, and the power of numbers, we can make management aware of the problems and improve this staple of New York life for everyone.

Submit your own stories via e-mail to duanereadesucks@gmail.com.

I have been ripped off twice in the last month at DR. Their prices are sometimes two or three dollars more for the same item than at Walgreens or Pathmark.

And they always put those stupid signs up that state "GREAT PRICE" when in fact that's their regular HIGH PRICE.

NOT shopping at DR anymore.

Duane Reade really has issues.....Went to the pharmacy to pick up 2 prescriptions. The person behind the counter was relieving someone else for lunch. When I approached the counter, I gave him my name over and over and spelled it 3 times for him, it was to my dismay that this person behind the counter didn't speak English very well at all, so you know he couldn't read English either. He gave me 2 presciptions, I paid for them and left the store. When I arrived back at my office, I realized that one of the presciptions wasn't even mine. I returned to the store and asked to speak to a manager. This was inexcusable. It was bad enough the person behind the counter couldn't speak or read English so I am sure he didn't he have a license to dispense medication. Which, I hope having a license is a necessary requirement in order to dispense medication. Again, an elderly person might not have noticed this and could have been a deadly outcome. Another incident just today - I am on automatic refill for 2 medications (which, by the way, I never asked to be on automatic refill). I picked up 2 medications on Thursday last week and took them home. When I opened the medication on Sunday, I realize they had given me the incorrect dosage. My doctor increased the medication 6 weeks ago and already had the newer prescription filled. I went to Duane Reade this morning and was told by the pharamist that once a medication has been taken out of the store, they cannot accept it back (even if it was THEIR mistake). Needless to say, I wasn't about to pay for a medication AGAIN when it was DR's mistake. How dare they. I insisted the pharmasist contact a supervisor. After much yelling and agruing and threatening to call the FDA and contact DR's corporate office, the pharmasist agreed to contact a supervisor (who wasn't even at the store) and I would be contacted. I had to call DR after 2-1/2 hours to find out what was going on. They agreed to refill my medication to the proper dosage at no additional charge. Who do they think they are? THEY made the mistake and the patient should pay for it? What if I was elderly and couldn't afford to pay for another medication. Needless to say, I will no longer shop at DR nor will I EVER have another presciption filled.
